Pueblo Church Plant

Beck’s Story

I grew up in Pueblo, Colorado, and left twenty years ago convinced I didn’t need that town and convinced I didn’t need God. I thought I was gong places, better places. It only took about 6 months for me to realize just how lost I was. The only place I was gong was down— Down in every way. Then the kindness of the gospel found me. Since that night, I've spent the last 20 years serving in ministry, and now God is sending our family — my wife, our three kids, and yes, three pets — back to the city I once couldn't wait to leave. We never thought we would live in Pueblo and now we can’t wait to get to the Steel City. We are hoping to start services before the end of the year.

Why Pueblo?

I sometimes call Pueblo the "Lo-Debar” (2 Samuel 9) of Colorado — the place of nothing, the town people drive past. But the King's decree goes out to the forgotten people in the forgotten cities, and there are Mephibosheths in Pueblo just like everywhere else: people who feel disqualified by their past and don't yet know there's a seat for them at God's table.

Our vision is to plant a gospel-centered church there, and God is already moving. After three vision trips, five couples and five singles have committed to relocate with us, and three solid families already in Pueblo have joined the core team. We're praying for a launch team of forty.

One story captures the season we're in. Before a recent prayer meeting, a friend handed me a small plastic bag — his nine-year-old son's allowance was in it. $9.22 of change and few bills. He said that his son had saved up to give to the church plant: $9.22. It was the very first offering given to the Pueblo church. Not exactly the start you are looking for if you want to make a dent in one of the most violent cities in the county. But we believe God as been making big things out of small things for his Glory since the beginning.  We asked one question that night: "What can God do with $9.22?” That simple question coupled with a kids tremendous faith made for one of the best prayer times I have had in my life.

We've decided to set it aside in its own account, and Lord willing, when the church in Pueblo someday plants a church of its own, that offering will go with it — a token of what God does with small beginnings.

Prayer Requests

• That God would gather the full core team of forty and prepare the soil in Pueblo

• For the sale of our home and a smooth move (showing a house with four kids and three pets is its own adventure)

• For our family's transition and our kids as they say goodbye to friends and school

• For provision — my current salary ends in June, and network support won't begin for a while, so our most immediate needs are salary coverage, moving costs, and a down payment
