Sermon Discussion John 8:12-30

Here’s a few sermon discussion questions to help our church love God by applying his word to our lives. Feel free to use these questions for personal reflection, alongside your family, within a smaller discipleship/journey group, or even within the context of your Life Group. If you missed Sunday’s sermon from John 8:12-30 you can view it online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LeQQ7rhEWSk&t=9s

___

As mentioned on Sunday, John 7:53-8:11 is not found in the earliest manuscripts of the New Testament and thus we consider this text spurious. There is much to say about this text but also why we can trust the reliability of our bibles. Here is a commentary from the ESV Study Bible on this passage:

There is considerable doubt that this story is part of John’s original Gospel, for it is absent from all of the oldest manuscripts. But there is nothing in it unworthy of sound doctrine. It seems best to view the story as something that probably happened during Jesus’ ministry but that was not originally part of what John wrote in his Gospel. Therefore it should not be considered as part of Scripture and should not be used as the basis for building any point of doctrine unless confirmed in Scripture.

For more information on this area of study known as textual criticism, we recommend the following resources:

___

Here are a few questions to spur further reflection and discussion from Sunday’s sermon, The Light That Cannot Be Eclipsed:

TPQ:

Take some time and reflect (personally or as a group): In what ways do you benefit from light? You can go any direction with this question from the gift that light is all the way to technologies of daily life that depend on it – but think through specifically, what would life be like without light?

___

As Jesus consistently does throughout the gospel of John, he’s using a physical reality to explain a spiritual truth. Pastor Aaron nailed home this idea that Jesus’ claim of being the light of the world is in-fact what we need to not just survive life (bios) but to thrive and have abundant life (zoe).

Can you think of passages or verses that high(light) this significance of light? How about specifically OT passages? See passages like Isaiah 9:6, 42:6, 49:6; Psalm 27:1, 119:105

How is Christ the fulfillment of these OT passages?

___

What is our role now as a people who are united to Christ? (Matthew 13:43; Acts 13:47, 26:18-23; John 1:5-7)

Matthew 5:14-16 says we are the light of the world. We are to shine through our deeds to the unbelieving world so that people will glorify God. Can God be glorified by our deeds alone? What else is necessary for someone to glorify God?

___

How would you answer the application question from the sermon…how are your personal watts of shining Christ? We all could be brighter but is the Holy Spirit teaching your or leading you to make some changes in your life so you shine brighter? Share tangibly how you, in the context of community, can increase your wattage.

___

As the discourse between Jesus and the Pharisees continue, they begin to mock him. What are the 2 ways they mock Jesus in this passage?

How does Jesus bluntly respond?

Jesus is a fullness of grace and truth. When it comes to evangelism, many of us are heavy on the grace (serving, loving, caring) and light on the truth (severity of sin, need for a savior, repentance). Is there anyone in your life you need to be more explicit or blunt with about Jesus? How can your Life Group play a role in sharing with this person(s) the gracious truth of who Christ is and why he came to save sinners like you and I?

___

Pray that the Lord would open doors: Colossians 4:2-6

Next Sunday’s passage: John 8:31-59

Sunday Gathering 08.27.2017 (check out textual criticism link!)

Here are a three simple ways you can prepare your heart:

1) Read through and meditate on the text that will be preached that Sunday with your family and/or friends.

3) Pray for God to reveal Himself to you and the The Crossing church in powerful ways!

Worship through the Word:

Many of our English translations of the New Testament mention (or have a footnote) that John 7:53-8:11 is not in the earliest manuscripts. Because of this, we won’t be preaching through John 7:53-8:11. However, we do believe this is a story that most likely happened during Jesus’ ministry. There is much to say about this area of scholarship called ‘textual criticism’ and why we can trust our bibles. Pastor Aaron will briefly explain our reasons why we won’t be preaching this spurious text at our Sunday Gathering. If you would like to learn more, you can listen/read this message on this particular text and topic of textual criticism.

Sermon Discussion Questions John 7:25-52

There was a lot of rich stuff that was highlighted in this recent sermon. Let’s try and focus on few things in the hope that they will have a great impact on us.
TPQ:

Have you ever experienced intense thirst? What was the situation? How good was the water once you drank it?

Read John 7:25-36

Describe the people around Jesus at this festival.

What things do they understand about Jesus? What things do they misunderstand about him?

Which people are hostile toward Jesus? Which people are interested in Jesus?

Read John 7:37-39

We’ll spend most of our time here.

Aaron mentioned that it is very common for people to try and “drink” from things that won’t satisfy. What are some of these common “drinks” that our culture sips from?

He also highlighted that Christians are not immune to this. We often times trade out the Holy Spirit as the third member of the Trinity for someone or something else, in the statement “Father, Son, and _______” what are some common things that Christians use to fill in the blank?

Break up into groups of 3-4 people that you feel comfortable with. First, read some Scriptures to each other that Jesus probably had in mind when he said this.

Read Isaiah 12:3, 58:11; Jeremiah 2:12-13, 31:12; Ezekiel 34:26; Psalm 36:7-9, 84:5-7, 107:35

Now in humility and honesty, talk to each other about the ways that your thirst has been satisfied by the Spirit of Christ in your life.

Speak honestly about the struggles in your life that are made worse by trying to sip from different “drinks.”

Who are the people that you can be a source of living water to in your life and what would that look like?

Pray for each other.

If there’s time after this, come back together as a group to finish the text.

Read John 7:45-46

If you are feeling down or condemned because you see the areas in your life where you’ve “sipped from different drinks,” take courage in a couple things.

  1. When Jesus invites people to come drink, who does he specifically invite?
    1. Answer: anyone. This includes even the people who were conspiring to kill him that day. He invites everyone from the curious onlookers to his vitriolic enemies. He is inviting you.
    2. May be worth mentioning that the verb tense in the Greek communicates “come and keep coming to me” and “drink and keep drinking from me,” so this is not a one time act at salvation, but the continual invitation to the believer as well.

  2. What was the response of the officers who went to arrest Jesus?
    1. “No one ever spoke like this man!”
    2. If you are feeling troubled, don’t let that push you away from Jesus, but toward him. Go to the one who can arrest you with his words. Go to the one who has waters springing up to eternal life (John 4:14), go to the one who has the words of eternal life (compare Peter’s words in John 6:68).

Sermon Discussion Questions John 7:1-24

Here’s a few sermon discussion questions to help our church love God by applying his word to our lives. Feel free to use these questions for personal reflection, alongside your family, within a smaller discipleship/journey group, or even within the context of your Life Group. If you missed Sunday’s sermon from John 7:1-24 you can view it online here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiKmXHvUR5s

TPQ:  How do you handle it when you know someone strongly disagrees with you or even doesn’t like you? In this passage, we’ll see how Jesus dealt with criticism and opposition.

At this point in the story, Jesus is getting more well known and the religious leaders are getting more angry at His teaching & His claims. By the end of chapter 6, many of His own followers have deserted Him.

Before the Feast of Tabernacles (booths) vs. 1-9

This feast (or festival) was mandatory for devout Jews to come to Jerusalem, one of 4 feasts throughout the year, and it happened in the Autumn. All the details of the celebration of the feast pointed the Jewish people to what God had done for them in their desert wandering after the Exodus. It reminded them of His salvation & provision toward them.

Q: what has God shown you, through circumstances in your life, that points you back to Him or gives you a fuller understanding of Him?

In vs 2-5, Jesus’ brothers tried to influence and direct Him, not believing in Him. Jesus acknowledged that the world didn’t understand or embrace Him. He says the world even hates Him. He had a timeline He was following that was according to His Father’s will, not people’s expectations.

Q: have you had family members that don’t understand or accept your faith? Are there others that are around you that don’t like you because of what you believe about Christ? If not, could it mean that you don’t stand strongly enough for the truth of the Gospel?

Jesus At the Feast  vs 10-24

Jesus goes to Jerusalem for the festival and the people were in disagreement about who He was: “(only) a good man” or “a deceiver”?

Q: do you know anyone who might hold to one of these two views about Christ (both of which are wrong)? Why do you think they see Him that way?

In vs 14 and following, as He begins to teach, those listening were amazed at His words. Yet, what He says goes against what they expect or understand.

He clarifies that:

-His teaching is from God, and He is sent by God

-when you choose to follow God, you understand the truth of His teaching

-those who follow Him will glorify God as they live in the truth

Jesus goes on to point out their hypocrisy, and He makes reference to the uproar that happened when He healed the paralyzed man (in ch 5). Their priorities were confused because their understanding of who God is and of scripture was off.

Q: how does your understanding of scripture affect your priorities? How is your approach to the Bible affecting the way you live & act? Take time to look to the Lord in prayer and ask Him to reveal your own hypocrisy to you. Perhaps you can spend time with another brother or sister in Christ and ask them to lovingly identity where your priorities may not be aligned with God’s.
